NICE and the ABPI invite you to the fourth event in 2023 in the NICE/DSU/ABPI Masterclass Programme - ‘Methods for the analysis of non-randomised, patient level data for the estimation of treatment effects.

The NICE/DSU/ABPI Masterclasses are unique in being focused solely on the specific requirements of NICE and its Appraisal Committees and on the challenges associated with key areas of evidence generation and methodology. They are specifically designed for staff in pharmaceutical companies who prepare submissions, the consultancies that support them, and members of the academic groups who review submissions.

This masterclass ‘Methods for the analysis of non-randomised, patient level data for the estimation of treatment effects’ covers an increasingly important area of methodology and has been developed for those who are currently involved in developing submissions to the NICE technology appraisals programme. It is suitable for those who are familiar with economic evaluation and the requirements of the NICE Guide to the Methods of Technology Appraisal. It does not require any specific statistical knowledge but will assume that attendees are familiar with simple concepts like regression. Please note, this masterclass considers methods that are used when the analyst has access to individual patient level data for at least one of the relevant technologies. It does not deal with those scenarios where the analyst only has access to summary statistics from published studies. It is intended to be of relevance either to those wishing to perform such analyses or to critically appraise them.

This masterclass is an opportunity to hear directly from members of the NICE Decision Support Unit and NICE on:

  • The features of non-RCT evidence that require particular consideration when estimating treatment effects
  • The key aspects of a range of available methods for the analysis of non-randomised, patient level data
  • Which of those methods have been used to date in technology appraisals and how the Appraisal Committees have received them
  • How to select methods from the menu of available options
  • How to critically appraise studies which estimate treatment effects using non-randomised data
  • The use of population adjusted indirect comparisons for those situations where the analyst has access to patient level data for some part of the network but aggregate data for other parts

The event will take place face to face only at the Double Tree by Hilton, Tower of London and will consist of a mixture of formal presentations, discussion and group exercises centred around real-life examples and published papers.

Speakers for the day include:

  • Professor Allan Wailoo, Professor of Health Economics, SCHARR, University of Sheffield
  • Professor Mónica Hernández, Professor of Health Econometrics, SCHARR, University of Sheffield
  • Jean Hamilton, Research Fellow in Statistics, SCHARR, University of Sheffield
  • David Phillippo, Research Fellow in Evidence Synthesis, University of Bristol
