ABPI response to launch of International Science Partnerships Fund

UK Science Minister George Freeman has announced a new global research fund to deepen scientific collaboration between the UK and international R&D powers like Japan. The International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) will be opened with an initial £119 million in UK Government funding.

With the pandemic shining a light on the need for greater research collaborations, it’s good to see them expand to new locations around the world, and we hope many others – and associated investment – will follow. This needs to be alongside continued efforts to resolve the impasse with UK association to Horizon Europe. Dr Jennifer Harris, ABPI Director of Research Policy

Commenting on the news, ABPI Director of Research Dr Jennifer Harris said:

"International research collaborations have been fundamental to medical breakthroughs from the discovery of penicillin to Covid vaccines. In 2018, 55% of recent UK research publications were the result of an international collaboration – a figure that doubled over the previous two decades.

"With the pandemic shining a light on the need for greater research collaborations, it’s good to see them expand to new locations around the world, and we hope many others – and associated investment – will follow.

"This needs to be alongside continued efforts to resolve the impasse with UK association to Horizon Europe.”
