Graduate training programmes are designed to provide training to recent graduates. Often, they involve rotations in different business areas of the company, providing a range of skills for the graduate.
Whereas, Graduate industrial placements are short-term placements for ongoing postgraduates or graduates. These placements offer industrial experience as well as collaborative networking.
Duration
The 2024 survey captured 2 years as the most popular duration for graduate training programmes. For graduate industrial placements, 1-<2 years was captured as the most popular duration.

4 in 5 graduate training programmes are 2 years in length
Business area
Graduate training programmes usually complete rotational projects throughout. These may include rotations in scientific and non-scientific business areas of the company allowing the graduate to acquire a broad set of skills. 1 in 4 graduate training programmes are in clinical R&D in addition to pre-clinical R&D. 1 in 5 are in manufacturing.
1 in 3 graduate industrial placements are in clinical R&D and almost 1 in 5 are pre-clinical R&D - followed by marketing, finance and HR.
